You put all this effort into researching all the details, booking the reservations, checking to make sure the weather report was clear, filling up your cooler with healthy snacks for the road, and making sure everything comes off without a hiccup.
Well, that’s exactly what I attempted to do last weekend.
You see, my girlfriend Nikki loves adventure. She loves the outdoors and loves traveling. She’s been bungee jumping, shark diving, sky diving, you name it…she’s done it.
So I wanted to plan an awesome surprise for her to take her to a high ropes adventure course in Flagstaff, Arizona. The plan was to arrive Saturday morning with plenty of time to find our campsite and then to get on the ropes for our 11:30am reservation.
Now there are two important things to know about my girlfriend. Number 1, she’s not the biggest fan of giving up control, so she doesn’t really like surprises. Number 2, she went out the night before with her girlfriends, so forcing her to wake up at 7am already put her in a very cranky mood. 😉
Fortunately, she trusts me enough to just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.
So the morning started off flawless…
We hit the road right on time, filled the gas tank, and were on I17 heading north towards the mountains.
Within an hour of hitting the road towards the mountains, we were caught in a torrential downpour, which can be a disaster for Arizona drivers who rarely see rain.
After a quick bathroom break 15 miles from our destination, my car started to wobble uncontrollably. After pulling out of the gas station underneath the overpass I had to pull over to check it out.
You guessed it… A flat tire!
Immediately I got frustrated. I knew that we weren’t going to make our appointment for the ropes course. Surprisingly, my girlfriend got very excited about having to fix a flat for the first time in her life.
So 30 minutes later, after getting angry that the lug nuts wouldn’t loosen until we jumped on the wrench with our full body weight, we fixed the flat and were back on the road.
By the time we got to the adventure course we were ready to jump right in. To our surprise, there turned out to be a group of 30+ boy scouts who were going through a training certification in front of us.
What supposed to only last for 2.5 hours turned into a 5 hour marathon. About half way through the course, we pulled over one of the guides asking for a rain check. After 15 minutes of them talking to the manager, we got permission to come back bright and early the next morning to go through the end.
We woke up the next morning to heavy rains which made the experience much more challenging, but also fun.
So needless to say, my well planned out surprise didn’t go anything like I planned. Despite this, we had an absolute blast which led to a huge life lesson for us…
