How To Handle Discouragement From Your Loved Ones

Sadness

Tears Are Filling My Eyes As I Write These Words…

I just got off the phone with a family member who I love and respect deeply.

She has supported me through some of the most difficult times in my life, but when it comes to pursuing my passion, she provides nothing but discouragement.

You may even be able to relate to this conversation…

—> How are you going to make any money from this so-called “passion”?

—> How are you qualified to coach people without any certifications?

—> You are at severe risk of being sued since you don’t have a professional license.

—> The “family” is talking about you and wondering what the hell you’re doing with your life.  They’re all wondering…’when is Peter going to grow up and get a real job’?

As I was being inundated with one accusation and concern after another, I could feel my heart being ripped wide open.

And the sad thing is…

She wasn’t intentionally trying to discourage me.  She was doing this from love and concern for my own safety.

As the lump grew larger in my throat, I fought back tears of fear and doubt from pouring out.

I knew if I spoke one word she would hear the quiver in my voice.  She would hear the crack and pitch that would immediately show weakness.

“Breathe”, I said to myself…”Breathe”…

When It Comes To Pursuing Your Dreams, You Have To Have Thick Skin

You have to be willing to move forward in the direction of your dreams when no one believes in you.  You have to have courage in the face of fear.  You have to persevere when you’re exhausted and when it seems impossible to take another step.

You have to develop purpose so strong it will pull you forward.  You have to have inner strength and a willingness to tolerate pain and sleepless nights and make sacrifices on the way to achieving your goals.

You have to be willing to RISK EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE to achieve your vision.

I Feel An Incredible Amount Of Fear Around Publishing This Blog Post.

But I know to my core that I’m not alone in this.

And I know that there’s somebody out there experiencing similar resistance who needs to hear these words right now.

It’s not that your family doesn’t love you or want you to succeed.

It’s that their love for you is so strong that they don’t want you to fall down.  They don’t want you to get hurt.  They don’t want you to fail.

Despite the pain and fear I’m feeling in this moment, I’m committed to move forward.

I’m committed to continue sharing my message with the world no matter what the critics say.  Even if those critics are my closest loved ones.

So I Challenge You To Silence The Critics In Your Life And Keep Moving Forward.

Your dreams are bigger than the doubts people cast on you.

  7. Excellent post. Many of us have probably felt the same pain. I don’t think family often knows how much pain their words have and how you never forget those words. Stay strong and follow your passion and dream!

    • Peter Scott says:

Thanks Tina, and yes, family often doesn’t realize when they are discouraging you. Their #1 concern for you is your safety above all else. Knowing that, makes me understand and have empathy for my family members that are feeling scared for me.

  8. Keep going!
